The Lord of the Rings. Another series that has given us new household names based on fictional characters. It started as a personal work for Tolkien, and ended up a masterpiece that is read most likely world-wide.
NOTE: I'm counting the Hobbit in this thread as well, so it's open for discussion. I've never particularly thought of it as a separate book myself, even though it is. That and I'm too lazy to make a separate thread for it.
So what do you think about it?
Personally, it's been ...lets see 7th grade was...about 6 years since I've read it. However, when I read it, I thought it was just like the best book ever. (I say book, should say series I guess. I had all of mine combined into one -thick- hardback copy.) The world of Middle Earth is very interesting to me. I've found myself examining the map of it in my book more than once. I also find the characters intriguing. . . Except the hobbits. I wasn't especially fond of hobbits. Sounded like a bad off-spring of a rabbit to me. The story is very good and maintained my attention all the way through. There are also subtle things thrown in, which I got a smile out of. (Not that I could recall them by the top of my head, I just remember reading a line or two here or there, or a quote here or there in the series that made me smile because I got more out of what was being said than just the words.)
Personally, I find it great entertainment for audiences of all ages, rather it be a little kid or full grown adult. Especially now that it's out on movie and you can visually see what's going on. I've seen adults and children alike enjoy the movies, as well as the books.
So although I've read great works since then, such as Shogun and Dune, that just take the cake for me, I find that this is one of the better series of books out there, and worth the read if you like a good fantasy-fiction novel. Which I do.
That's my 2 bits on it.
