The Things They Carried. The collection of stories by Tim O'Brien about young soldiers in Vietnam. The footmen. The life they lived there, what it meant for them, what it did to them, what it did for them.
This book has got to be one of the best I've ever read. My English teacher suggested it, so I read it. I figured it would suck, I mean the teacher suggested it, right? Wrong. Tim O'Brien manages to capture the very essence of a person in his writing. The thoughts, the actions, the vivid recalling of events. The smell of the air, the hazy fog over the rice patties. Everything. It almost makes you feel like you've experienced it yourself, and so you can really appreciate what comes out of this book thanks to that. I know that for me, it really made me spend some time thinking about a lot of things in life, and I'm glad it did.
Even if you're not a fan of war stories, I'd read this book anyways. Because if you have any perception at all, you'll get more out of this book than just some war story about people dying, or how they still act like kids and strap a claymore to a dog before they blow it up. (Okay, there's my obsession with things blowing up again, but whatever...)
Yeah, defentially a must read.
