Shogun, the gigantic novel by James Clavell. It entails the story of Captain John Blackthorne as he and his crew wreck into the scuss words of Japan during their attempts to circumnavigate the world. It tells of his story in this strange land.
Personally, to date this is my -all time- favorite book. I'm fascinated with Feudal Japanese culture, a lot of which can still be seen in some parts of the nation today. I also enjoy history in general, and this book being set in about the year 1600, is very interesting. To me, it's right at the turning point between story-book history and modernization.
I encourage anyone and everyone to read this book. It's not just a great story, but good for learning a few basic words in Japanese, as well as an introduction to their way of living. It has captivated me since the first time I read it, and I like it just as much now that I've read it 2 or 3 times as I did the first time I opened it. I started out thinking "God, this thing is huge! It'll take forever to read!" But when I finished that last page and realized "Hey, the book's done." I was sitting there wishing for more.
So what'd you think?
