Alright, some of you knew it was coming from me sooner or later... So, what are some of your favorite musicals? Do you like the older ones? Or do you prefer the newer ones? What was the first musical you ever watched? How about the last? I've seen a few musicals on video. Some of them include but are not limited to the following: Wizard of Oz Easter Parade Seven Brides for Seven Brothers West Side Story Fiddler on the Roof Chicago CATS (filmed OBC) Les Mis (filmed OLC) The Producers Newsies High School Musical I'm eclectic and eccentric enough to like all kinds as you can see from the limited list. There are some good and bad things with the older ones, but that goes the same for the newer ones as well. There's a different feel to the older ones compared to the newer ones. And then theres the ones that started off as actual on stage productions and moved to film/movies... comparing those to the musicals that just started off as movies... Can't remember the first one I ever saw, but the last one would be "The Producers" as I saw that the other night. I had already seen the on stage production, but found the movie interesting and entertaining.

Peg, I was just thinking about adding this thread the other day .. then I forgot.
Have to say, I love Newsies. It's one of my all time faves. The first one I ever saw was probably Fiddler on the Roof. My Dad watches that and South Pacific about once every 5 years so I end up watching with him. Love The Producers. Mel Brooks always cracks me up.

Hmm..Wizard of Oz counts as a musical?? didn't know that.
I started to read the book Les Mis, and it sucked. I read about 200 pages and it just repeated itself. So I quit reading it. If you can't get a good book in the first 200 pages (longer than some full books) then it's not worth reading.
Also have a friend who likes musicals. She's in love with RENT and Wicked.

I've seen two versions. Which one does your Dad watch all the time? Hmm..Wizard of Oz counts as a musical?? didn't know that. Of course it does... any time you've got people randomly singing, it's a musical. haha. I love musicals... Wizard of Oz has several songs. "Somehwere Over the Rainbow" for one. The book was meh/okay/alright. The several movies were okay/alright... depending on which one you see. The musical on stage productions kick arse! Screw the book, Ty. Go watch the movie. ;D I've seen RENT on stage as well as the movie. I own the movie actually. All versions of RENT kick major arse. Gotta love it. As for Wicked, I dont' think there is any movie version... yet. I wouldn't mind seeing a movie version, but I'd definitely have to see a stage production first... preferably with Idina Menzel. She'll be in the original london cast btw!!!

Yeah, the friend I was talking about is a big fan of Idina Menzel...apparently a bunch of people are, lol. I'm not much into musicals myself. I never thought of the Wizard of Oz as one, but I loved it....
I haven't gotten to see RENT or Wicked, but both looked very good from what previews and stuff I saw. I'd like to sometime.

Tangent: Oooh, hook me up with some Idina fan love! lol...
If you can't see a RENT production, the movie is pretty good. It's not exactly the same. It has its highs and lows/ups and downs/ goods and bads... but for the most part, I think you might like it.

The best musical has to be West Side Story. I don't like musicals all that much, but that is one kick-a**ed movie.

Peg, the South Pacific I've always watched is the '58 version with Mitzi Gaynor. I think the only reason my dad watches it is because he likes some of the songs and our record player doesn't work so he actually gets to hear them if he watches the movie.
Seffy, I've never seen West Side Story, but my mum uses it in conjunction with her Romeo and Juliet unit at school. I suppose I should actually watch it sometime to see why she has her students do a comparison/contrast paper sometime.
And yes, Ty. Random singing in a movie=musical. They're not very common these days though. The most recent one that I know of is The Prairie Home Companion. However, with the movies like Walk the Line and Ray having so much success, musicals have made a bit of a comeback. Given that De-Lovely did so poorly, seems like you just need to tell the right person's story.

Walk the Line was so not a musical. Not your standard musical like you're talking about. Granted it had a lot of singing, but it was a movie based on the life/career of a singer! It wasn't random singing about the yellow brick road! Same with Ray (I need to watch it still...)

Ty, Walk the Line and Ray are the musical of this day and age.

So not musicals. The singing is not random and stuff. Like in Disney movies or The Wizard of Oz. They just sing out of the blue. That's what makes it a musical, as far as being a movie. I don't find that a movie based on a singer/musicians life classifies as a musical....that's stretching it a bit I think.

Wile, the '58 version of South Pacific is good... songs-wise. My family still has a couple record players, and they still work to this day. Come to think of it, last time I visited I played the vynil record of "The Music Man" ;D ... haha. Perfect as "The Music Man" is a musical. I haven't seen any stage production of it, but caught the movie with Matthew Broderick who also just happens to be in the musical "The Producers." Good music. The record wasn't with Matthew Broderick, but of an older and possibly original OBC version. Back to the movies topic though, The Music Man with Matthew Broderick was an entertaining version. Good music as usual. I'm not 100% sure, but when I saw it the first time it felt like they had filmmed in HD or the like as it had a technicolor-ish feel to it.
Tangent on "West Side Story" and "Romeo and Juliet"... That seems like a classic compare and contrast. It's intersting. I like it. Wile, if you don't mind me asking, is your Mom a high school teacher?
I'd have to agree with Ty on this one. Whenever there is singing in "Ray" and "Walk the Line" it's in context. They're practicing songs or on stage performing. They aren't singing "out of nowhere"... Like Ty said, it's not random.
And "musicals of this day and age"? I think the "musicals of this day and age" are either musical adaptations of stage productions or linger around the "pop" section - adaptations like Chicago, The Producers, and most recently Rent as well as the "pop"-ish section like Newsies, High School Musical, and again Rent.
