The only thing that guy should've been a master of is a straight jacket and a padded room. Personally, I find his works that I've been exposed to distasteful and rather unworth the time. The man had severe personal and mental issues to write some of that stuff. That's my two cents on him.

*Has actually done research into Poe*
Ty, I'm not picking on you or anything, but your opinion of the guy is typical, but largely inaccurate. He was a bit out there, agreed. He was a drunk (probably what killed him in the end, but we don't exactly know for sure), and yes, he did marry his cousin, but he was quite harmless. For the time period, his writings were rather fitting. In fact, a lot of Poe's works really aren't that grotesque. They're more like thrillers rather than horror. His poetry is mostly forlorn which reflected his depression. He had a tough life and it just came out through his work (He was an orphan at a fairly young age and his replacement father wasn't nice to him at all). I'm not saying I love the guy or that he was the nicest person in the world. I'm just saying that he's gotten a bad rep for his work because everyone judges him on that and not his life.

This guy reminds me too much of Stephen King. It just tells me that either he had some horrific nightmares and wrote them down, which would be fine. Or that he was twisted. Granted, of course I never knew him and couldn't have known him, but I do know that writing like that worries me about people.

Personally, I don't care why he was derranged in the head. He was messed up in the head and I think that he should've been in an instution to try and help him take care of his issues, not writing materials that made his screwed up ideas avaliable to others. An idea is dangerous, getting someone even crazier who might try some of his ideas is worse though.
I mean, no amount of alcohol, and no bad history accounts for stories like The Pit and the Pendalum(sp) and the one where the guy kills his wife and blocks her up behind a brick wall then gouges the cats eyes out because the cat saw him do it.
That's pure and unrefined, uncurable insanity.
I dunno, I really couldn't care less about how hard his life was. I'm a person that I think you make the best out of life. You don't go "oh my life is so hard and i'm a drunk and that's why i'm so depressed" and stuff, I think "hey I had a hard life, but I'm gonna make something out of it." and I don't pity him or think it justifies his writing. I mean, I've had to do the studying on him in school, and well, *shrug*, it still hasn't changed my opinion that the guy was screwed up beyond all repair.
